Lifebox is the leading NGO addressing the fastest-growing global health crisis today: unsafe surgery and anaesthesia. Lifebox was founded by Dr. Atul Gawande, in collaboration with the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland, the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health and the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists.

An Indian anaesthesiologist helped to select the ground-breaking Lifebox pulse oximeter, specially designed for use in challenging environments. Since 2011, Lifebox has provided more than 16,000 of these essential monitors to hospitals around the world in more than 100 countries, alongside training and support introducing the World Health Organization’s Surgical Safety Checklist - making surgery safer for 10 million patients.

With a population of 1.3 billion and a landscape that ranges from the mighty peaks of the Himalayas to the deserts in the west, safer surgery and anaesthesia for all of India is a serious undertaking. Lifebox is proud to be working with a range of partners, to provide essential equipment and training to operation theatres and recovery rooms across the country. Starting in Assam, Bihar, and Maharshtra, this work is expanding to reach over 800 providers across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra and Manipur in the next few months.

We work closely with local anaesthesia providers like Dr Surajit Giri, leading the way for safer care in their communities. He single-handedly organised the first Lifebox workshop in India.

“I have always dreamt of patient safety. The Lifebox pulse oximeters will increase the safety of post-surgical patients in Assam.”

But more than 7000 of India’s 15,500 operation theatres are still missing a pulse oximeter - putting millions of lives at risk. Thanks to a grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, Lifebox is working on a three - year project to support safer surgery and anaesthesia in India. But we need your help.
